Theodore Lillie
Theodore Lillie is a visual artist working in primarily photography. He received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1997.
Lillie explores a wide range of methods of expression within the photographic medium. Sometimes he shoots straight photographs of urban cultures or nature. Sometimes he weaves (literally) together different photographs to 3D works, creating intense, unified scenes or themes reflecting moods of contemporary life. Or sometimes he pieces together sequences of photographs of the same scene, juxtaposing them in strategic ways that create a new dialogue and gives the viewer a feeling of looking at an object or scene from a myriad of perspectives. In this way Lillie's work challenges the traditional view of one-shot photography. In his work layers of the assembly are metaphors for life; by regularly dismantling parts, re-inventing dialogue and context, he examines the creation of personal, natural and communal realities.
Lillie is also the technical director of fulcrumProjects, an interdisciplinary performance art company fusing visual art, music and dance. His work has been exhibited at the Smith Andersen North, fulcrumProjects, Gen Art, SFMOMA, CounterPULSE, the San Francisco Art Institute Diego Rivera Gallery.
