![]() Parallel Universes - George Herms & Gregory Edwards
August 27 - September 24, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 10, 2011, 6-9PM Smith Andersen North is pleased to present Parallel Universes, a two-person exhibition featuring longtime friends--legendary west coast assemblage artist George Herms & Oakland-based abstract painter Gregory Edwards. Both arose, a decade apart, out of the vibrant west coast art movements of the 50s and 60s--Herms as part of the Beat generation and Wallace Berman's circle, and Edwards out of Los Angeles' burgeoning new jazz scene and the social and political activism of the late 60s. When they met in the 70s, they recognized their kindred spirits, born out of mutual reverence for spontaneity, personal expression, poetry, the improvisational nature of jazz and free association, the influence of abstract expressionism and as Herms puts it, "a love [for] seeing what we've never seen before." Four decades later, Parallel Universes explores the work of two artists who have drawn inspiration from remaining in each other's orbit.
